It was about time that the local Goodwill received some competition. After they built their new building the prices on donated stuff just about tripled.  Two dollar coats became six dollar coats and fifty cent items became a buck fifty. It was getting ridiculous. As you can imagine, I was pretty excited when news of the Salvation Army coming to town began circulating. When they had their Grand Opening I, of course, went shopping. While I was there I noticed and picked up their brochure. I had seen Salvation Army folks around during the holidays, but that was about it. I was pretty curious about what the Salvation Army was all about. I was pleasantly surprised (I might be the only one) when I read their mission statement. They state that they are “…an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. It’s message is based on the Bible. It’s ministry is motivated by the love of God. It’s mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination”. I guess I figured they had gone the way of the YMCA and other similar organizations that are “Christian” in name only. Apparently not.

All that to say, you might want to consider the Salvation Army before other non-profits that are out there when you think about volunteering, donating, etc. Yes, they are a para-church organization, but at least they still believe in the Bible.
