Since even Haven has been posting more than me of late, I figured that I ought to say something. So here’s a cool quote that I found lately, while perusing Robert Alter‘s translation of Genesis.

The unacknowledged heresy underlying most modern English versions of the Bible is the use of translation as a vehicle for for explaining the Bible instead of representing it in another language, and in the most egregious instances this amounts to explaining away the Bible.

I think he’s right. I’m reminded of Jim Jordan’s (rightful) diatribe against the NIV in his Theses on Worship.
